Project #4: Self Portrait

In Uncategorized on May 16, 2011 at 11:35 am

For this project we had to create a self portrait that incorporated objects and images that embodied or expressed who we are, our likes and dislikes, etc. I had many a ideas for this self portrait, but none of them seemed interesting or doable to me except  for this one. For this piece I decided to portray what I would like my future to be like. I would like to live in the New York, drive a mustang, and enjoy the night life in the city. So I used objects like the Ford Mustang, images of a city, the night sky, and the Yankee’s logo to project an image of what my future would look like. I put this image in a crystal ball to symbolize the fact that I am looking into the future. To add a more personal quality to the piece, I included myself wearing the jersey of my favorite soccer team and wearing my favorite hat in the background. There is also a soccer ball within the glass  orb, but it is very transparent.

To create this image in Photoshop, I used tools like the brush tool, the quick selection tool, the eraser tool, and the blending and layer masking tools to create the image inside the crystal ball. For the orb, I looked up a tutorial on how to make glass orbs online. The background image is simply an image that I took with my camera that I altered using a dry brush filter.

I like the way this piece came out. I don’t think that there is anything else that I would do to change it besides adding some more images of myself or things that I like.

Project # 3: Principle of Design: Dominance

In Uncategorized on April 30, 2011 at 11:34 pm

This design was a collage of images put together in order to communicate the principle of design of our choice. For this design it was quite difficult to come up with a topic and determine which principle of design I wanted to use. I wanted to do something simple that would not take me too much time to create, but I wanted it to look very good. So I decided to use the principle of dominance, and with that I incorporated the topic of nature and conservation. With this design I always knew I was going to center the main subject in some way. I decided to make a tree the main subject of the piece, and have the background be a city or a dump in order to show how we are destroying nature and filling the Earth with waste. So to isolate the tree, I covered it with a fishbowl using the eraser tool and the rotation tool. I also used the cloning tool and the magic wand tool to make the orb out of the fish bowl. To make the glowing effect I used the brush tool and reduced the opacity and the hardness of the brush in order to make the colors look transparent but also have them give off a gradient. Then, after I put the tree into the orb, I tweaked the saturation of the background image, which is Paris by the way, and the orb with the tree to make them seem cohesive and added the text under it because that is what we were supposed to do.

This is another version of this design.

Project # 2: JMB Inspiration Design

In Uncategorized on April 30, 2011 at 11:14 pm

When creating this poster I decided to take my inspiration from the graphic designer Josef Müller-Brockmann. His simplicity and use of the grid system and the Swiss Style of design have appealed to my interests as a graphic designer. As a designer, I like to keep things simple and beautiful at the same time, and that is what I believe Josef Müller-Brockmann tried to do as well. With this design I decided to create a movie poster for the new Tron Legacy film that came out this year. I chose this topic because I love watching movies and, apart from the horrible plot, I really enjoyed the visual beauty of the film, the colors and the visual effects. So I decided to use Brockmann’s style in my design and, as you can see, I incorporated his use of the Helvetica (Akzidenz Grotesk) font in my piece and I also mimicked his Akari poster and the way he positions his text (flush-left or flush-right).

This design has opened me up to a new way of designing. I have learned that it is always good to look back at what artists did in the past and to learn from them. Design has been around for a long time, and we have had many years to develop the craft. So it is important not to underestimate what has been done in the past because the chances are that whatever it ideas we are thinking up today have already been thought of 50 years ago.

Project #3: Element of Art: Dominance

In Uncategorized on April 10, 2011 at 4:48 am

Dominance: The principle of visual organization in which certain elements assume more importance than others in the same composition or design. Some features are emphasized and others are subordinated.

I chose the element Dominance because I feel that many pieces incorporate this element in one way or another. Here are some examples of Dominance being used through the use of color, size, negative and positive space, etc.

What I want to do with this element of design is create a piece that emphasizes the horrible things that we are doing to our planet. So my piece will include a tree placed in the middle of or city or a field of trash. The background will probably be black and white and the tree will be in color. The text might say something like ” Protect our Planet”, or something along those lines.

Josef Müller-Brockmann

Josef Müller-Brockmann was a Swiss graphic designer born on May 9, 1914 in Rapperswill, Switzerland. He studied architecture, design and Art History at the University of Zurich, and in 1936 he began his education and work as a graphic designer. He was a practitioner and theorist in the Swiss Style of design in which he utilized grid-based designs, illustration, and subjective feeling to communicate his message. In the 1950s, Brockmann used constructivism techniques to create a series of posters, called “Musica Viva”, for the Zurich Tonhalle. This series includes some of his greatest work.

Musica Viva

In 1957 Brockmann began teaching at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts and wrote his book “The Graphic Artist and his Design Problems”.Brockmann was the founder and editor of the journal called Neue Grafik ( New Graphic Design) which portrayed the principles of Swiss Style design from 1958-1965. In 1967 he was the European design consultant for IBM. In 1981 Brockmann published the book “Grid Systems in Graphic Design” and in 1996 Brockmann died.

Brockmann’s style and his designs have inspired graphic designers for years . His use of the grid system in his designs provide a sense of order and organization. He also incorporates geometry, shapes, illustration, and color into his designs, but the most important aspect of his work is its simplicity. His style resembles that of a minimalist in the way that he breaks his pieces down to their basic features rather than making them very complex images.

Elements of Design

Josef Müller-Brockmann’s work contain most of the elements of design. He uses line and direction in almost all of his work where he uses a grid system to align his images and typography. Shapes can be found in his work as well, especially in his “Musica Viva” posters for the Zurich Tonhalle. Size is a big element in all of Brockmann’s work, whether it is in the hierarchy of scale in his typography or in his images. He uses size to emphasize the main points of his pieces. One of the most important elements in his designs is color. Color can be found in almost all of his pieces, but it is never over used. Brockmann uses color to direct the eye and emphasize information in his designs. He uses color sparingly but always effectively.

Here is some of his work:

I love this design. This is hot.

Logo Design 3 Using the Pen Tool

This is the third logo design. The picture of the hole punch was created using solely the pen tool. The font in this design is different for the others; it’s called Corbel.

Logo Design 2

This design is slightly similar to the previous one. I used the same text, BlairMdITC TT Medium, that I used in the last design. This design, I believe, is simple and sophisticated.

Logo Design 1

This is my first logo design for the hole punch. It is a very simple design in which I used both the ellipse tool and the text tool. The font in this design will be found in almost all of the others simply because it just looks cool and professional.

Project 02: Abstraction-Simple Object Form Image 1

Creating this image in Illustrator was very time consuming. But I believe that by doing this I have definitely learned a lot about how I can use Adobe Illustrator effectively. I am pleased with the end product.
